Bulldog / ITE “Pushmatic” Electrical Panel Replacement

About the Bulldog Electrical Panel

Bulldog and ITE Pushmatic panels were installed primarily between the 1930s and 1960s and are easily identified by their push-button style breakers. While these panels were considered innovative in their era, they are now classified as obsolete and are commonly recommended for replacement due to age and service limitations.

Problems with Bulldog and ITE Pushmatic Panels

Unlike modern breakers that flip on and off, Pushmatic breakers rely on internal mechanical components that can stiffen or fail over time. Many Pushmatic breakers do not trip reliably, especially after decades of use. In some cases, breakers may appear to function but fail to respond during an overload.

Another major concern is availability of replacement parts. Pushmatic breakers are no longer manufactured, and finding new old stock (NOS) breakers can be expensive and unreliable. Even when replacement breakers are located, they may already be decades old and subject to the same aging issues as the originals.

Pushmatic panels were also designed for much lower electrical demand than modern homes require. Today’s appliances, electronics, and HVAC systems often exceed what these panels were intended to support, increasing the likelihood of overheating and system stress.

While Pushmatic panels were never officially recalled, their age, mechanical limitations, and lack of serviceability make upgrading the safest long-term solution. Replacing a Pushmatic panel improves safety, increases capacity, and ensures compatibility with modern electrical requirements.
